{"id":1541,"date":"2016-01-05T11:36:53","date_gmt":"2016-01-05T11:36:53","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.pmabookkeeping.co.uk\/?p=1541"},"modified":"2016-01-05T11:36:53","modified_gmt":"2016-01-05T11:36:53","slug":"tens-of-thousands-ring-in-the-new-year-by-submitting-tax-returns","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/www.pmabookkeeping.co.uk\/index.php\/tens-of-thousands-ring-in-the-new-year-by-submitting-tax-returns\/","title":{"rendered":"Tens of thousands ring in the new year by submitting tax returns"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>record-breaking 24,546 people submitted their tax return online on New Year\u2019s Eve, HM Revenue and Customs (HMRC) has revealed.<\/p>\n<div>\n<div>\n<aside>\n<figure>\n<div><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"placeholder\" src=\"https:\/\/assets.digital.cabinet-office.gov.uk\/government\/uploads\/system\/uploads\/default_news_organisation_image_data\/file\/152\/s300_hm-revenue-customs.jpg\" \/><\/div>\n<\/figure>\n<\/aside>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<div>\n<div>\n<div>\n<p>These latest numbers represent a 2.8% rise on one year ago, while more than 11,467 people sent off their Self Assessment tax return on New Year\u2019s Day 2016 itself.<\/p>\n<p>Hundreds of people decided to spend the first hours of 2016 completing their Self Assessment, with more than 600 people submitting their tax return between midnight and 10am on New Year\u2019s Day.<\/p>\n<p>The data also show that the number of people completing their tax return on Christmas Day broke records, with 2,044 customers submitting their tax return \u2013 an increase of 13% on 25 December 2014.<\/p>\n<p>On Boxing Day, 5,402 customers ignored the temptation of the sales and instead chose to find their inner peace by completing their Self Assessment online.<\/p>\n<p>Ruth Owen, Director General of Personal Tax, <abbr title=\"HM Revenue and Customs\">HMRC<\/abbr>, said:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>As we all enjoy the festive season it\u2019s easy to see how completing your tax return can be forgotten, but the 31 January deadline will be here quicker than we think.<\/p>\n<p>Our advice is don\u2019t leave it until it\u2019s too late. Make sure you give yourself plenty of time and remember our online service is available with helpful advice and handy tips any time of the year, whether that\u2019s on Christmas Day, or even New Year\u2019s Eve.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>The deadline for sending 2014-15 tax returns to <abbr title=\"HM Revenue and Customs\">HMRC<\/abbr>, and paying any tax owed, is 31 January 2016.<\/p>\n<p>Notes to Editors<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>If you are completing your 2014-15 Self Assessment return online for the first time, you will need to register for SA Online.
